Nepo vs Lapo: your Lagos Life start explained
When you create a character the game rolls a birth lottery that decides whether you begin rich and connected (Nepo) or hustling on a microloan (Lapo). Here is what each one actually gives you.
You cannot choose — and it is permanent
The Nepo/Lapo roll happens once per account. You cannot pick it, and starting a new life does not re-roll it. "LAPO" is a nod to the real Nigerian microfinance lender.
Nepo vs Lapo vs student — side by side
These starting figures come from community fan-guides and are not yet officially confirmed — we are checking each one in-game and will mark them verified as we go.
| Start | Starting cash | Home & rent | Job | Perks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nepo (Lagos) | ₦500,000 | Lekki mini-flat — rent paid by family | Branch Manager ₦31,500/shift | Toyota Prado + starter furniture |
| Lapo — Mushin | ₦76,000 (incl. loan) | Mushin · ₦2,400/week | None — find your own | Trains skills ~25% faster |
| Lapo — Yaba | ₦96,000 (incl. loan) | Yaba · ₦6,000/week | None — find your own | Trains skills ~25% faster |
| UNILAG fresher | ₦14,000 | Akoka hostel · ₦1,200/week | None · ₦3,000 weekly allowance | +25% per shift after you graduate |
The LAPO loan
Lapo players start carrying a loan: fan-guides put it at ₦60,000 repaid over 6 weeks at ₦12,000/week (₦72,000 total), which you can clear early. Miss a weekly repayment and that week's amount reportedly gets a 10% penalty added. Budget for the repayment the same way you budget for rent.
Which start is better?
Nepo is an easier opening — big cash cushion, a car, and rent handled early. Lapo is harder but trains skills faster, and the game is designed so a determined Lapo player can climb all the way up. Either way, your long-term wealth comes from jobs, side gigs and businesses, not your starting balance.
